B is for Breckenridge - November 2012

Subtitle: B is also for Brrrrrr

We left Greeley around 8 in the morning on Paul’s 60th birthday to spend the weekend in Breckenridge.  Bad weather had been forecast, but we braved it anyway.  Ran into a little snow and icy roads as we passed through the Eisenhower tunnel, but made it safely to beautiful Breckenridge.
We checked in downtown at the Ski Country Resorts & Sports and got keys and directions to our condo – Park Meadows Lodge.
A snowy walk to Parks Meadow Lodge in Breckenridge.
Brrrr!!! We braved the cold for a brisk walk to downtown Breckenridge.  Here is a picture from a bridge as we crossed the Blue River.
Back at home we have a husky mix named Blue Eyes, Blue for short.

Paul does lots of research for these trips and had already decided to have a birthday lunch of “the best subs in Breckenridge” at Jake’s Dive Bar.
The winter decorations added to the beautiful atmosphere of Breckenridge.
Breckenridge is rich in history as the oldest Colorado town west of the Continental Divide.  A non-profit organization called the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance protects over 250 structures in one of the largest historic districts in the state of Colorado.

We visited the Victorian home of Barney L. Ford.  A knowledgeable tour guide from the Heritage Alliance met us at the door and entertained us with wonderful stories about Mr. Ford, an early black leader for civil rights, escaped slave and prominent Colorado entrepreneur

We visited several shops, drank hot chocolate at an Italian restaurant, and bought juice and two big beautiful muffins for breakfast the next morning.
Twin Moose Yogurt Company- Do you think they milk moose for their yogurt? We bought muffins instead.

Paul had purchased tickets for the Colorado Avalanche Information Center 5th Annual Benefit Bash which raises money for avalanche awareness and education.
We attended the benefit that evening at the Breckenridge Riverwalk Center.  We enjoyed the bountiful buffet, listening to the band, browsing the silent auction tables filled with skiing equipment, meeting the city manager and his wife, checking our raffle tickets as numbers were called, and of course, people watching.  We determined that we were two of the eldest people in attendance and definitely the most unfit.
Tune in next time for day 2 of our adventures in Breckenridge. Find out what we found to add to our kitchen collection as we work our way through the alphabet.
